But the case is dragged up from the past when the Price family agree to a true crime documentary. Bel can’t wait for filming to end, for life to go back to normal. And then the impossible happens. Rachel Price reappears, and life will never be normal again.
Rachel has an unbelievable story about what happened to her. Unbelievable, because Bel isn’t sure it’s real. If Rachel is lying, then where has she been all this time? And – could she be dangerous?
18-year-old Bel has lived her whole in the shadow of her mom’s mysterious disappearance. Sixteen years ago, Rachel Price vanished and young Bel was the only witness, but she has no memory of it. Rachel is gone, long presumed dead, and Bel wishes everyone would just move on.
With the cameras still rolling, Bel must uncover the truth about her mother, and find out why Rachel Price really came back from the dead. . .
From world-renowned author Holly Jackson comes a mind-blowing masterpiece about one girl’s search for the truth, and the terror in finding out who your family really is.
Goodread’s Description
Let me say, I LOVED reading this book. It was twisty, intriguing, and shocking all wrapped into 400 pages… aka everything a good mystery book needs! I immediately fell in love with the characters, especially the quirky Londoner, Ash.
I would recommend this book for teens all the way to adults who enjoy a thrilling ride through crime, family drama, and secrets galore. Every time(and I mean EVERY TIME) I thought I knew what was coming next, something new reframed the whole mystery.
Since I don’t want to spoil it, I’ll try to keep any details brief(emphasis on try- sorry people).
Bel is an interesting character. I will admit, she didn’t steal my heart the way Ash or Ramsey did, but I really liked her. She loves her father very much, and pushes away anyone who gets too close to her. She’s sarcastic, mean and a good liar– which is what makes her arc all the better. She doesn’t stop being sarcastic, but she lets her heart heal, and that arc was a necessary touch to her character that I loved.
Ash is one quirky dude. He’s the camera assistant, and since his description, I knew that he would be my favorite. One of his outfits was: tartan pants, and a bright purple sweater with green-and-yellow dinosaurs on it. And he’s from London. And he responds to Bel’s rudeness with smiles instead of harsh words back, which was yet another point for him.
Now, the Price family was interesting to me. Bel’s cousin, Carter, is like a sister to Bel, which I enjoyed. Her father is caring, her Aunt Sherry is controlling of Carter, and Uncle Jeff is… well, he can’t read a room to save his life. Her Grandpa is a small part, though a necessary one. He had a stroke around a year ago, and is volatile.
The setting takes place in a small town in New Hampshire, and revolves around Charlie Price’s house, Grandpa’s house, wherever the film crew happens to be, and there are a few key scenes at the hotel where the film crew is staying at.
There is very little romance, only a slight amount between two characters, as the book is more focused on The Reappearance Of Rachel Prince rather than The Romance Of Bel Price.
The only downside to this book—for me personally—would be the swearing. There is a lot of swearing, sometimes as often as several on a page. While I know this isn’t as big of an issue for some readers, if you are sensitive to language, you may have to take a pass on this one.
I would, all-in-all, rate this book a solid 4-and-a-half out of five stars. The characters are relatable and interesting, the plot and mystery is intriguing, the setting is immersive, the writing is exceptional, and it is an all-around good book.
I hope you take a chance of reading The Reappearance Of Rachel Price!
