Two Noahs On The Subway: My Flash Fiction Piece That Went To AG National Fine Arts

Two Noahs On The Subway: My Flash Fiction Piece That Went To AG National Fine Arts

Hello my fellow readers and writers! Until now, all of my blog posts have been either about books or about writing, and I wondered… maybe I should share some of what I’ve written?

So this is going to be a semi-short blogpost, since Two Noahs On The Subway is only 597 words long– which is actually only 3 words away from the cutoff.

Two Noahs On The Subway

I’ve heard a lot of interesting things riding the subway home from school. Breakups, get-togethers, arguments, evangelists, drug dealers, the whole nine yards. I don’t remember a lot of the stuff I’ve heard, to be honest. But there’s one conversation that I’ll never forget…

I was texting my mom, telling her that I would pick up groceries on the way home. There was a boy around seven years old sitting across from me, his mother chattering away on her phone. Standing about a foot or so away from the boy was an old man, probably in his 80’s.

He had a big smile on his face and a book in his hands. He was telling everyone who passed him that he knew the secret to eternal life. A lot of those people passed him, ignoring him or rolling their eyes. The little boy was intrigued though. He looked up at that old man, his eyes as wide as silver dollars.

“Really?” He squeaked, and the old man grinned and nodded. “How?” The little boy asked him, leaning towards him. I shook my head at such foolishness. No one could live forever! The old man took a step closer to the boy before asking his name.

“Noah,” the little boy told him, and the man’s eyebrows shot up.

“That’s my name too!” He said, his smile growing even bigger.

“Cool,” young Noah exclaimed and gave old Noah a shy smile.

“Now, you asked me the secret to eternal life, right Noah?” Old Noah clarified. Young Noah nodded enthusiastically, and I rolled my eyes. Old Noah held up his book and said, “Jesus is. He’s the way, the truth, the life, and the only way to Heaven. You’ve heard about heaven, right?”

Young Noah nodded, then frowned and asked, “Isn’t Jesus a person?”

“He is, but He’s also the Son of God too. He came down to earth, so that if we believe that He really is the Son of God, that we can go to Heaven to live with God forever.”

Young Noah seemed to think that over before nodding, “so Jesus is spe-seal?” Old Noah nodded and handed young Noah the book he was holding.

“You see this? This is the Bible. It has Jesus’s life story in it, and a bunch of other super cool people.”

Young Noah’s eyes went huge again. A shiver ran down my spine and my body tingled as I stared at the Bible in young Noah’s hands. Was old Noah right? Young Noah sure seemed to think so.

He tugged on his mom’s jacket after she put her phone up, and grinned at her. “Mommy! I know the secret to eat-ernal life” he told her excitedly, putting the Bible in her hands.

“Where’d you get this?” she asked him, flipping through the pages.

Young Noah’s grin split wider. “From an old man whose name is Noah!”

His mom smiled at him before asking, “what’s the secret to eternal life?”

Young Noah tapped the Bible in his mom’s hand before saying, “Jesus.” That one word stirred something in my heart, and I swore that I heard a soft whisper, like a gentle breeze, saying, “come to me, sweet child.”

The next Sunday when I was at church with my mom and younger brother; I accepted Jesus as my Lord and Savior and got baptized. It was the best decision of my life. This is my testimony, and no one can take Him away from me. I'm a new creation in Christ, and it was all because of two Noahs on the subway.

And there you have it, my Flash Fiction called Two Noahs On The Subway! I hope you liked it, even though I sometimes cringe when reading it(I wrote it around a year ago, and I consider writing sometimes even as old as two months to be terrible, hah.)

Please leave a comment and share my blog with your friends, and I hope you have a good day!
