Weekly Reading Update: What I’ve Read!
Hello and welcome, my fellow readers! I’m here to share what books I’ve read this week! Sorry that it’s a day late, Friday was busy and I had a bit of a headache… but now it’s time to get into what I read!
I… read six books this week, so this might be a little on the longer side.
Sadie by Courtney Summers
Sadie was, for me, 4.5 stars. It was so good, but so, so very sad. It has a dual-pov between Sadie, as she hunts down her sister's killer, and West McCray’s podcast, The Girls, that follows after Sadie in his attempts to find her.
I really enjoyed that flipping of pov’s, but the plot dragged in some spots, just enough for me to demote it by half a star.
Though I would say this book is 16+, with reader discretion. This book might not be suitable for you if you are sensitive. In fact, though it’s YA, some adults might not be able to stomach the sensitive content found in here. I would recommend looking up Sadie’s content warnings if you’re considering reading this book.
Love & Letter Charms by Rachel Morgan
4 stars. I loved Aurelise and Ryden, the two main characters in this cozy, Regency-inspired fae romantasy. It’s also a mix of the Selection, so I’ve heard, though I’ve never read that book.
Aurelise is shy, so I resonated with her, and Ryden was just… I really liked him as the love interest, I’ll say.
It was definitely the light read I needed after Sadie.
Thief of the Heights by Son M. & Robin Yao
This book is a 4 star graphic novel. I normally don’t read graphic novels, but I was convinced to pick this book up and read it. It was good, though there were parts of the plot that I didn’t understand.
The characters felt realistic, and I liked the worldbuilding, though I think it could have been explained a little bit… but that might just be my opinion as a non-graphic novel reader.
The Kiss of Deception by Mary E. Pearson
This book was 4 stars (a lot of four stars this week), and the plot & Lia were the two main reasons why I didn’t like it enough to give it 5 stars.
Lia, the main character, did grow on me as the story progressed, but I felt that the pacing dragged at the start, then picked up… then dragged again. The plot was interesting though. And, I really liked Rafe.
Twins Crowns by Catherine Doyle and Katherine Webber
Again, another 4 stars. Don’t get me wrong, I really enjoyed this book, but there were again, times that I felt that the pacing was a little off, and it took me a little bit to like one of our two main characters, Rose. Wren, I liked from the start.
The world and the plot, however, I really enjoyed, and I also loved the two love interests, Tor and Shen. And the magic system, and its explanation, was, in my opinion, very well done, and while not strictly unique, a fresh take.
The Escape Game by Marissa Meyer and Tamara Moss
This was 3.5 stars, though it’s rounded down to 3 stars on my Goodreads. Now, don’t get me wrong, the four main characters, Adi, Carter, Beck, and Sierra, were awesome, and the plot twist at the end was insane…
But the pacing and believability was not great. There were several moments during this book that felt too slow or too fast, and other times where I found myself thinking, yeah, that’s not really… that wouldn’t… happen.
Out of the four main characters, I liked Adi and Carter the best. Carter is the shy, smart girl who hides behind her famous online persona, and I resonated with her (though I don’t have a famous online persona). Adi was just… I really liked him, and his dry wittiness, and the fact that he loved reading and acted like a bit of a pretentious nerd.
Though I technically finished the book at 1am this morning, I’m counting it.
But there it is, the summary of the books I have read this week. It’s been a bit of a long week for me… because, wow I have read a lot… and done a lot writing wise! It just feels surreal.
That’s it! I might try to get a writing project update out, but stay tuned for next week!
